PTS launch the obvious successor to the traditional hand wound landing legs with the PTS50 Pneumatic Trailer Support System.
In conjunction with Camozzi Pneumatics Ltd the PTS50 Pneumatic Trailer Support System has been designed with all the usual problems considered and alleviated by skilled engineers using the latest CAD modelling and Finite Element Analysis.
Operation is by push button control and fed by the trailers system. There is no need for the support system to raise or lower the trailer as this can be done using the airbags on the modern tractor unit therefore making this a safe static support rather than raise/lower system.
The PTS Pneumatic Trailer Support System greatly reduces the risk of upper limb musculoskeletal disorders and injuries caused by wind handles and worn gear boxes by replacing the hand wound legs with a simple automated push button system.
Studies have shown that the repetitive winding action and extreme forces required to operate a damaged or poorly maintained system can place undue pressures on the operator’s muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and other soft tissues and joints. The back, neck and upper limbs are particularly at risk.
The push button system is provided with a safety coupling for the Red Line; therefore, the trailers brakes will not be released until the legs have been raised correctly, and the locking pin engaged. This means that the operator is always at leg side when the brakes are released, this reduces the risk of being crushed between the trailer front panel and the cab in the event of park break and connecting problems.
Unlike the screw and nut inside a traditional hand wound leg the locking pin can be visually inspected without strip down, the legs can also be inspected and maintained whilst still fitted to the trailer.
In a busy distribution hub where frequent drops are made the PTS50 comes into its own.
The pneumatic trailer support system takes 5 seconds to drop and lock whereas a traditional hand wound system can take up to 3 minutes to secure.
In addition the system does not require to the operator to take up the 3 points of contact stance for safe winding of the crank handle, this in turn allows the trailers to be parked in close proximity allowing for more economical use of a depot.
Each leg is plated to handle a static load of 50 tonnes per leg (100 tonnes per set) as standard
The legs do not rely on the traditional screw and nut meshing which can over time, wear or fail due to incorrect use or age. Instead they comprise a piston system with a locking pin which is designed to withstand abuse.
The hand wound legs found in use today are generally replaced if one of the tens of moving parts fail,due to the down time required to make a repair. The PTS50 only has four moving parts which have all been designed to give many years of trouble free use. If a part does get damaged it can be quickly replaced by the removal of a couple of bolts and the damaged component exchanged. This greatly prolongs the life of the system and reduces any down time incurred during trailer repairs.
